Spree and South African clothing brand Butan Wear team up to search for the mystery photographer and subjects behind a popular household portrait that hung in many black South African households in the 1970s and ‘80s.
Everyone knows the picture, but no one knows who the mother and child in the portrait are.
“This project isn’t just about the picture and finding the mother and child. It is about a lot more,” says Julian Kubel of Butan Wear.
I was brought onto this project to help bring the story to life in a motion picture form – so off to Johannesburg I went and for a a couple days we hit the streets of Soweto, Alexander, and Katlehong to capture what more we could find out about this fascinating tale.
